Semester and Year Timelines
Be aware that some study abroad programs, including Oxford and Cambridge, have earlier deadlines. Popular programs may fill early through rolling admissions. If you're planning to study abroad in the spring, we encourage you to apply before you leave for the summer to beat the rush in September!
Reach out to your Education Abroad advisor if you have questions about your application or when you should apply.
Why are there two deadlines?
Applying to study abroad is a two-step process. Some programs have early external application or nomination deadlines, and other programs may have capacity constraints. Program-specific deadlines are listed on program pages on Experience Cornell.
Oxford and Cambridge applications are due in November.
Oxford and Cambridge applications are due in November of your second year. Note that this is very early—the typical date for spring applications—so plan ahead if you're interested in these programs.
Are there advantages to applying early?
Yes! Students report that applying early is less stressful. Most programs fill by rolling admissions, and some may fill before their stated deadline. In some cases, early applicants get earlier access to sign up for classes or housing.
What does it mean to commit to a program in Experience?
When you commit to a study abroad program in Experience, you notify Education Abroad of your intention to participate fully in the program. Once you've committed, you will be nominated to your program, if applicable, and receive access to the onboarding materials for predeparture.
Can I apply later if my program is still accepting students after the Experience deadline?
No. You must honor the deadline in Experience for Cornell approval. This internal deadline is set before most program deadlines to allow time for required college and university approvals. The deadline also gives the Education Abroad team time to prepare your program-specific budget, so you and your family will fully understand your financial obligations.
Exceptional cases referred by colleges—for example, an injured athlete who wants to use the sport season to study abroad—can be considered for a very limited time immediately following the Experience deadline. If you believe your case qualifies, contact your college advisor.
